“Priority” handles — typically full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric usernames — will be free to request for Premium+ and Premium Business users. Once approved, these handles will be transferred to the requester at no cost. However, if a subscriber cancels or downgrades their plan, the handle will revert to their previous username after a 30-day grace period. Examples of such handles include @GabrielJones, @PizzaEater, and @ParadoxAI.
The new marketplace is designed to generate additional revenue through direct payments while making X’s Premium subscriptions more attractive amid its ongoing advertising challenges. Requests won’t be automatically approved; the review process typically takes up to three business days. Once approved, a user’s old handle is reserved and can’t be reassigned.
Meanwhile, “Rare” handles — short, generic, or culturally significant names like @Pizza, @Tom, or @One — will not be available through standard requests. Instead, they’ll be sold through invitation-only drops or direct purchases, with prices determined by factors such as popularity, word length, and cultural relevance. Buyers will retain ownership of these handles even if they later cancel their Premium subscription.
X clarified on its help page that the marketplace approach was chosen over releasing all inactive handles at once to reduce spam and misuse, ensuring a “fair and secure” distribution process.
Users interested in specific inactive handles not currently listed can register their interest by adding them to a Watchlist. If the handle becomes available, X will send a notification.
