This was revealed in a statement issued on Friday by Dr. Felix Ale, Director of Media and Corporate Communications at the National Space Research and Development Agency.
The statement noted that the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS on Thursday.
“To enhance policy coordination, we are open to receiving European Union technical support for our Interministerial Committee on Research and Innovation,” the minister said. “We are also seeking assistance for an STI indicators survey and a technology foresight initiative to help shape our scientific and industrial development.”
He stressed the importance of enhancing technology transfer and commercialization to bridge the gap between research and industrial use.
“Nigeria is committed to advancing technology transfer and turning research outcomes into practical industrial solutions,” Nnaji stated. “We also seek broader participation of our public research institutions in EU-funded programmes to promote knowledge sharing and innovation.”
The minister also underscored the significance of the current bilateral agreement on Science, Technology, and Innovation between Nigeria and the European Union.
He stated that the current bilateral agreement on Science, Technology, and Innovation offers a solid foundation for collaboration, and emphasized Nigeria’s intention to strengthen its implementation to encourage joint research, knowledge exchange, and investment in key technological sectors.
Addressing Nigeria’s clean energy goals, Nnaji highlighted the country's interest in partnering with the European Union on renewable energy initiatives.
“As part of our commitment to clean energy, we are eager to collaborate with the European Union on Green Hydrogen and Green Methanol projects. These efforts support global carbon reduction targets and will drive Nigeria’s energy transition,” he explained.
The minister also appealed for European Union support in developing Innovation Hubs throughout the country to foster entrepreneurship and research-based ventures.
“In addition, we are seeking partnerships to establish Innovation Hubs across Nigeria to empower start-ups, promote research-driven enterprises, and stimulate job creation,” he said.
Reiterating Nigeria’s dedication to scientific and technological progress, Nnaji expressed confidence in the outcomes of the meeting.
“Your Excellency, today’s engagement represents a valuable opportunity to deepen our partnership for shared advancement. I am optimistic about the discussions ahead and reaffirm Nigeria’s strong commitment to working alongside the EU in achieving our science and technology goals,” he concluded.
